DESCRIPTION:Steelville\, Trail of Tears Documentary group.\nWe are proud to announce the Premier of the Mini-Documentary “Discovering Sites and Understanding Experiences Along the Trail of Tears in Steelville\, Missouri.” \nThe Steelville premiere is July 4th – at Freedom Fest between 2:00 pm and 9:00 pm in the Steelville Community Park and Recreation Area (the big park). \nThe viewing is at the Steelville Trail of Tears Remembrance Committee’s booth? \nThis short documentary will be added to the film series\, My Ozarks (myozarks.org) and will be available on H-TV (through Missouri Humanities). \nTrail of Tears\, Steelville\, MO. On the ground\, no dig\, investigations.\nIf you aren’t familiar with the films found there\, you should be! They help shine a positive light on rural Missouri! Steelville is one of those rural communities…we have good people doing good things! \nErin Whitson chose to come back home to work on the Trail of Tears for her PhD project. Archeology and anthropology walking hand-in-hand…helping to tell a story of people long ago…thru the use of modern tools (No ground disturbance!). DESCRIPTION:The speakers for this event have changed due to a conflict.\nThis episode introduces Archaeologist Erin Whitson\, the first in her field to focus on finding and interpreting historic encampment sites along the Trail of Tears to learn what the experience was like for people walking the path westward.\nSurviving Despair in its Thickest Blackness: Archaeological Approaches to Visualizing Cherokee Removal.\nArcheologist Erin Whitson has worked for years with members of the Cherokee Nation to identify tools and methods to authenticate sites like Steelville and interpret what they find. \nSteelville\, a town of 1\,500 people in Crawford County\, Missouri. Steelville is located along the Northern Route of the Trail of Tears where thousands of Cherokee\, Muscogee (Creek)\, and their enslaved people camped during the forced removal of Native people from the southeastern United States. \n  \nErin’s program will be replacing  the originally scheduled “Geospatially Rediscovering The Trail Of Tears In Missouri” due to a scheduling conflict.

DESCRIPTION:Registration Now Open\nSaturday\, December 5\, 2026\nSteelville Community Park.\n \n4th. Annual\, Remember the Removal Walk\, Ride\, and Bike along the original Trail of Tears northern route east of Steelville. Register NOW.\nAll proceeds will benefit the establishment of a Trail of Tears Monument in the Community Park.\n\nFor the 5-mile walk\, participants should meet at the Steelville Community Park.  The start time is 12:30.   Shuttles will be available to transport them to the starting location on Long Springs Road.  The walk will end at the Steelville Community Park.\nThe 13-mile trail ride starts at Brickey’s slab and ends at the Steelville Community Park. Start Time Noon. The bike route can be viewed on Strava.com\nThe 30-mile Bike Ride starts and ends at the Steelville Community Park.  Start time 10:00 A.M.Registration is $35.00 for each participant 16 and older and $20 for youth ages 10 to 15 prior to Nov. 14\,. After November 14\, adult registration is $40 and youth is $25 with no guarantee to receive a T-shirt. Children younger than 10 can participate for free and do not need to register but they will not receive a T-shirt.These are not timed events.\nThe Cherokee people’s forced relocation in 1838 via the “Trail of Tears” is an acknowledged tragedy in U.S. history. The Trail of Tears\, was a terrible and sorrowful journey\, one that the Cherokee people have not overcome. During this relocation process\, 10 Cherokee detachments were forced to make the passage through Steelville\, Missouri. Those detachments camped on the H. E. Davis Farm.  The location is now the Steelville Community Park.  The December 7th.
